'Unite for Diabetes' resounds at EASD Meeting

22 Sep 2006 11:41

At the 42nd Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Copenhagen, Denmark from the 13 -17 September, there was overwhelming support for the ‘Unite for Diabetes’ campaign.

As hosts, EASD provided a platform at their 14 September press conference for the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) to explain the aim of the campaign to pass a UN Resolution on diabetes. The campaign aims to increase global awareness of the diabetes epidemic and to improve care, treatment and prevention globally. EASD threw their full support behind the ‘Unite for Diabetes’ campaign.

In addition, thousands of attendees showed their support by wearing its symbol – the blue circle. The circle represents life, unity, health and is the colour of the sky that unites us. It is a fitting symbol for the diabetes pin.

The blue circle was prominently featured by Lilly in the EASD exhibition hall. Lilly dedicated a panel on their stand to the ‘Unite for diabetes’ campaign. The company is also a full supporter of the campaign as a corporate partner.

Novo Nordisk is also a corporate partner of the campaign. On 13 September, the company invited all the Ambassadors in Copenhagen and other dignitaries to a night at the Royal Danish Opera in support of the UN Resolution on diabetes.

Lars Rebien Sørensen, Novo Nordisk President and Chief Executive Officer and Martin Silink, IDF President-Elect opened the event. The duo explained why the world needs a UN Resolution on diabetes and encouraged the audience to get involved in the campaign. The Opera was bedecked with the blue circle: every seat had a pin and banners were hung throughout the Opera house. Petitions in support of the campaign were also available.

IDF welcomes the support of all our partners and the entire global diabetes community to help in our efforts to bring diabetes out of the shadows and improve care for all.
