Ukraine throws its support behind the UN Resolution on diabetes

At an international festival from July 6 to the 11 in Kiev, Ukraine and a host of other Eastern European countries joined together to support the UN Resolution on diabetes and to strengthen the social role of youth living with diabetes.

During the International Diabetes Youth Festival ‘Dnipro – 2006’, the Ukrainian Diabetes Federation officially pledged its support for the ‘Unite for Diabetes’ campaign. On July 7, a press conference was held at the Ukraine Ministry of Public Health to support the UN Resolution on diabetes. Representatives of numerous diabetes associations, businesses from Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Lithuania and Great Britain pledged their support for the UN Resolution, shared the experience they have gained from helping people with diabetes and discussed the problems faced by national healthcare systems and services worldwide.

Participants in the press conference included: Miroslava Zhdanova, Vice-minister of Public Health of Ukraine; Valentina Ocheretenko,  Vice-President of the Ukrainian Diabetes Federation; Sir Michael Hirst - Chairman European Working Group UN Resolution on diabetes; Svetlana Zacharova – Head of the Belarusian Diabetes Association; Vida Avgustynene, President of the Lithuanian Diabetes Association; Nataliya Tukalevskaya,  President of the Kazakhstan Diabetes Association; Benyuk Bohdan, President of the Ukrainian Diabetes Federation; Peter Bagriy, Chief Director of Hanza Ltd and Valeriy Vovcharenko, a representative from Sanofi Aventis.

During the festival, the Ukraine Diabetes Federation began a campaign to collect signatures in support of the UN Resolution on diabetes. The more than 30 youth participating in Dnipro – 2006, representing five countries from across the region, were the first to sign. They are pictured here wearing the distinctive blue circle logo of the ‘Unite for Diabetes’ campaign.
