Tribal leaders support the Unite for Diabetes campaign
10 Nov 2006 14:49
The United States Tribal Leaders Diabetes Committee threw their support behind the campaign for a United Nations Resolution on diabetes.
Indigenous populations are at high risk of type 2 diabetes. Over 50% of adults over age 35 in indigenous communities worldwide have diabetes. American Indian and Alaska Native communities have the highest published rate of diabetes in the world.
The Tribal Leaders Diabetes Committee committed to the Resolution “in recognition of our ancestors who have suffered from the impact of diabetes and its complications,” and because of their tireless work in diabetes care for the past decade in the 1.4 billion USD Special Diabetes Programs for Indians.
We support the work of the Tribal Leaders Diabetes Committee and welcome them to the Unite for Diabetes campaign.
