Read a draft of the UN Resolution on diabetes and urge your country to support

Diabetes is now a global epidemic with devastating humanitarian, social and economic costs. In order to tackle this epidemic, the International Diabetes Federation is leading a campaign to pass a United Nations Resolution on diabetes.
The People’s Republic of Bangladesh has taken up the charge as the lead sponsor of the UN Resolution and joined IDF in the fight against a global killer that claims more lives than HIV/AIDS each year. Many member states have signed on in support. Many, however, are still to be persuaded. Has your country declared its support?
The Resolution drafted by Bangladesh warns that diabetes and its costs will seek to undermine the UN’s Millennium Development Goals and recognizes the “urgent need to pursue multilateral efforts to promote and improve human health, provide access to treatment and healthcare education.” The Resolution would also officially designate World Diabetes Day, 14 November as a UN World Diabetes Day.
Read the draft Resolution. The Resolution will be finalized by the governments of Bangladesh and co-sponsoring member states. However, we expect that it will contain the elements included here.
Join us in urging all the member states of the United Nations to join Bangladesh and support a UN Resolution on diabetes. To do nothing is not an option.
In order to reverse this epidemic “member states need to develop national policies for the prevention, treatment and care of diabetes in line with sustainable development of their health care systems as outlined in internationally agreed development goals including the Millennium Development Goals.”
More than 230 million people live with diabetes. If nothing is done, this figure will exceed 350 million within a generation and undermine the benefits of improved standards of living worldwide. Help us to spread awareness about the seriousness of the global epidemic by asking your country to co-sponsor and vote in support of the UN Resolution on diabetes. Send a letter to your Ministers of Health and Foreign Affairs.
