Grass-roots campaigners are joining the world’s largest ever diabetes awareness campaign. The ‘Unite for Diabetes’ campaign aims to secure a United Nations Resolution on diabetes by the end of 2007. It gives a global wake-up call to decision-makers everywhere. It is time for diabetes to come out of the shadows. It is time for a United Nations Resolution on diabetes.
Sue Boutilier from Halifax, Canada has been actively supporting the ‘Unite for Diabetes’ campaign by corresponding with local and national decision-makers to encourage support for the campaign and at the same time raise awareness of the global diabetes epidemic.
Sue writes: “When I learned about the Unite For Diabetes Campaign seeking a UN Resolution on diabetes to be proclaimed on World Diabetes Day (November 14) 2007, I wrote letters to all of my municipal, provincial and federal government representatives requesting them to send me a letter of support for the UN Resolution on diabetes.
“This month, I sent out a total of 68 letters to government officials requesting that they write letters of support for the Unite for Diabetes Campaign for a UN resolution on Diabetes.
“My letters were sent to 23 Municipal Level Officials (Mayor and Municipal Councilors) - 18 Provincial Level Officials (Premier, Ministers and the Member of the Legislative Assembly for my area) and 27 Federal Level Officials (Prime Minister, Departmental Ministers and the Member of Parliament for my area).
“This fall, I will be traveling to New York to complete the New York City Marathon for the Canadian Diabetes Association. As a part of this event, I am also participating in the International Peace Run, which happens the day before the marathon, starting at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. It is my goal to gather letters of support from all of my government representatives (municipal, provincial, and federal) to be able to present to the Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations prior to the International Peace Run. “
Sue has promised to keep us informed of the responses she receives. We applaud Sue’s efforts and will share the responses that she receives as they reach us.
