Global Diabetes Walk - World Diabetes Day, 14 November 2006

19 Jul 2006 14:34

On World Diabetes Day (November 14) last year, the World Diabetes Foundation co-ordinated an event to raise global awareness of diabetes: the Global Diabetes Walk. Almost 90,000 people from 39 countries worldwide took part in the walk -- a clear demonstration that diabetes is a problem that affects all of us, whoever we are; wherever we live. Many of the walkers joined events organized by volunteers from WDF-supported projects that are helping improve the lives of people with diabetes around the world.

This year, WDF will be co-ordinating the walk to support the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in its bid to pass a United Nations Resolution on diabetes. The IDF campaign calls for everyone to ’Unite for Diabetes’. The Global Diabetes Walk is an ideal way to do this and could potentially raise awareness of the campaign on an unprecedented scale.

The Global Diabetes Walk will also be actively supporting the IDF/World Health Organization theme: “The disadvantaged and the vulnerable”, by creating awareness of the plight of urban slum dwellers around the world. These people are often the poorest of the poor; many are migrants or refugees; many simply homeless. They are subject to the worst problems related to urban living and have little or no access to medical support. Diabetes rates are abnormally high in these groups and there is a lack of access to diabetes care.

Support the campaign and World Diabetes Day by organizing one or more walks and by encouraging as many as possible to take part.

You can register your event and find out more details by visiting the Global Diabetes Walk website (www.gwlk.info) or by sending an e-mail to gwt@gwlk.info.

Support the ’Unite for Diabetes’ campaign, help WDF walk the world on 14th November 2006.
