World Diabetes Day in New York
The International Diabetes Federation marked the first United Nations (UN) observed World Diabetes Day by holding a variety of activities in New York and at the UN headquarters on November 14.
Activities included:
- a large human blue circle (the global symbol for diabetes) formed on the UN Rose Garden lawn with blue umbrellas.
- a symbolic 246-step march, representing the 246 million people with diabetes worldwide.
- a diabetes rally – a multi-educational and motivational experience with speakers, education and entertainment – at Guastavino’s on 59th Street
- the Empire State Building lit up in blue (see related article: Diabetes Lights up Empire State Building)
