Messages of Support

The IDF-led campaign for a United Nations Resolution on diabetes has energized the global diabetes community. The following are messages of support for, or actions on behalf of, the campaign to raise global awareness of diabetes. IDF is proud to be joined by its member associations and concerned members of the global diabetes community.

American Diabetes Association

“The American Diabetes Association is in full support of the International Diabetes Federation’s campaign for a UN Resolution on diabetes. Diabetes is a growing epidemic, with global implications, and it is imperative that world leaders and the diabetes community join together to prevent a worldwide healthcare crisis.” The American Diabetes Association Executive Committee.

American Association of Diabetes Educators

"The American Association of Diabetes Educators supports the effort of IDF and UN Resolution to raise public and political awareness of diabetes. Diabetes has become the fourth leading cause of death in developed countries as well as in the so-called developing countries where detection is poor and insulin, needed to treat most patients, is not always available. This global epidemic requires global effort to help people successfully manage the disease and live happier and healthier lives. AADE’s vision is successful self-management for all people with diabetes and related conditions; diabetes educators are committed to this vision." Lana Vukovljak, MA, MS, Chief Learning Officer and Interim CEO AADE.

Association of Diabetics ADEMADRID (Spain)

“The Association of Diabetics ADEMADRID fully supports the campaign initiated by the International Diabetes Federation for a UN Resolution on diabetes. The measures adopted in the developed countries are short term and often not centred in the education of diabetes and the prevention of further complications. On the other hand, in countries with less resources, and by all means in the third world, the diabetes happens to be much more serious, with very severe complications, even death, derived from the lack of care, information and mainly economic means and resources.

As I result we support a campaign that will make aware everyone individually as well as in a global way, because the diabetes illness does not distinguish between races, gender, regions of the world or spending power, however, its consequences are very different depending on what place of the world we live. This epidemic must be restrained by governments world-wide health programmes, promoting healthy lifestyle, exercise, sufficient knowledge in diet and feeding and, mainly, contributing resources for the care of the diabetes and thus to restrain the appearance of the chronic complications in the long term. For all the above, and in the knowledge that our contribution is modest, we support this campaign and we trust it will have a major success.” Pedro García Santiago – President of the Association of Diabetics ADEMADRID.

A UN Resolution on diabetes is of outstanding importance for all people with diabetes, particularly children.” Catherine Choong, President of the Australasian Paediatric Endocrine Group.

“About 500,000 people are estimated to suffer from diabetes (known or unknown) in Belgium and we will of course not escape the rise in diabetes prevalence. It is thus of major importance to highlight the burden that the diabetes pandemic places on the future society. Our intention is to largely inform the Belgian population on this important problem as changes in lifestyle can reduce the trend towards weight increase and thereafter to diabetes. We will require political attention of the various ministers involved in health. The Belgian Diabetes Association strongly supports the campaign to promote a United Nations Resolution on diabetes. We are proud to join this essential I.D.F. initiative.Viviane de Laveleye, Director of the Belgian Diabetes Association.

Communities and governments need to address the rapidly growing numbers of people with diabetes, its personal and socioeconomic impacts and the capacity for this disease to cause extensive personal misery and significant cost burden on a nation’s economy. DiabetesIndia

“India has been named as the Diabetes capital of the world by WHO. In reality, recent studies have shown that the magnitude of the problem has been grossly underestimated and that India already has more people with diabetes than had been forecast. Today, in India, diabetes is the main cause of lower limb amputations (after accidents), the single largest cause of blindness and it has been estimated that one in three patients needing dialysis or kidney transplants are people with diabetes. Were this not bad enough,  cardiovascular disease leading to heart attacks and strokes  are being seen in significantly more people and many of these patients are in a much younger age group then seen even a couple of  decades back. Diabetes is known to be one the most important factor predisposing a person to these cardiovascular diseases.

If the present scenario were not bleak enough, the global burden of diabetes continues to rise unabated and the major brunt of this increase will be felt in India (as well as other developing countries).  With this in mind, the International Diabetes Federation has taken a major initiative towards creating global awareness about this pandemic through a UN resolution. We, in DiabetesIndia, have seen, on the ground, the toll that diabetes and its attendant complications places on the common people and we wholeheartedly support this initiative of the International Diabetes Federation.”  Shaukat M. Sadikot, President of DiabetesIndia.

Diabetic Society of Seychelles

Mr. K.D. Pillay, Chairman of the Diabetic Society of Seychelles, in a letter to the Seychelles Minister of Foreign Affairs, said “The Diabetic Society of Seychelles humbly requests you as a vibrant small island nation to give all possible assistance to this noble venture…” Highlighting the global pandemic and the expected devastating humanitarian, social and economic costs, the letter also asked Seychelles to co-sign the UN resolution and to wholeheartedly support its approval.

“The Ecuador Diabetes Association supports this important initiative.” Maria Fernanda Lopez, President of the Ecuador Diabetes Association.

Egyptian Diabetes Association

“The Egyptian Diabetes Association is greatly concerned about the critical situation resulting from the progressive increase in prevalence of diabetes and its serious complications all over the world. We are especially alarmed by the consequences of this, especially on the socio-economics of developing countries. It is therefore the responsibility of both national leaders and the international community to unite their efforts to combat diabetes. We strongly support the IDF campaign to initiate a UN Resolution that deals with diabetes as an impending danger to humanity. This resolution must call for the cooperation of all governmental and non-governmental activities at both national and international levels.” Prof Morsi Arab, President of the Egyptian Diabetes Association.

European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology

“The European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) fully supports the campaign for a UN Resolution on diabetes. Diabetes is the most frequent and serious endocrine disorders in children. Adults with onset of diabetes in childhood experience a greater risk of developing vascular complications. Diabetes in children is also a problem in developing countries, where insulin is sometimes not sufficient for all patients and the quality of diabetes care may be limited by lack of resources. In more developed countries the epidemics of childhood obesity is adding further risk for the development of type 2 diabetes, already a relevant clinical problem in childhood and adolescence. A UN Resolution on diabetes is of outstanding importance for all people with diabetes, particularly children.” Francesco Chiarelli, Secretary General, European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE).

In this perspective, we are convinced that the UN Resolution provides a strong basis for worldwide diabetes advocacy so we are strongly supporting this IDF initiative.” Dr. Chantal Mathieu, President of the Flemish Diabetes Association, Belgium.

French Association for Diabetes

“The French Association for Diabetes fully supports the action of IDF, to raise awareness on diabetes, its complication and the burden it will represent for every nation in the coming years. Each government should take a clear position in favour of the UN Resolution; therefore we do our best to grow awareness of the French authorities regarding this capital issue.” Gérard Raymond, Président of the French Association for Diabetes.

"L’Association Française des Diabétiques supporte l’action d’IDF dont le but est de sensibiliser les dirigeants de chaque pays sur le diabète, ses complications, et sur le fardeau qu’il représente pour les patients. International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes

"The International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) strongly supports this initiative of utmost importance for many children around the world. Globally, diabetes is a disease in evolution affecting more and more children and adolescents. The last 30 years has seen a threefold increase in the number of cases of childhood diabetes. The burden is particularly harsh in the developing world, where many children with type 1 diabetes die because they lack access to life-saving insulin and where the majority pay for their healthcare from their own pocket to the detriment of the family budget. Also, in many countries, type 2 diabetes has been seen for the first time in young people in recent years. Thus, this campaign is likely to benefit many children in a global perspective." A UN resolution is urgently needed to unify and support the international efforts aimed at prevention as well as the proper and efficient management of diabetes and its related consequences." Dr. Majeed Almustafa, President of the Iraqi Diabetes Association.

Israel Diabetes Association

“The Israel Diabetes Association fully supports the International Diabetes Federation’s campaign for a UN Resolution on diabetes. Diabetes is a global epidemic, which requires global efforts to help raise both public and medical professional awareness. The number of people suffering type 2 diabetes is set to double over the next ten years, but the government’s response is inadequate. Governments are unaware or unwilling to face up to the major challenge that this condition presents both now and into the future. The official attitude is reflected in the fact that there is no clear policy for diabetes screening and many governments simply do not wish to spend funds in this area, despite the fact that currently the burden of diabetic complications takes up to 15 per cent of healthcare budgets. The implementing of a National Campaign for a UN Resolution on diabetes needs to be made a national priority.” Israel Diabetes Association.

Italian Association for Diabetic People Interests - AID

ONE TOUCH ULTRA Team

“We are a group of people with diabetes type 1, almost all of us for more than 20 years.  We have formed a sport team competing in Spain, Liga Española de Raids de Aventura http://www.raids.fedo.org/RaidFedo.php. Having knowledge of the campaign initiated by the International Federation of Diabetes (IDF), through the association in which we all collaborate and through our sponsor Lifescan, we would like to support this initiative due to the enormous importance and repercussion that we believe it has. To suffer diabetes does not mean to be an impediment for the personal, social and labour development of a person, but we need: knowledge about diabetes, motivation to overcome its day to day care and economic resources in order to have the last advances to the care of diabetes.

It is not easy to combine all these requirements, mainly in poor countries, for that reason alone the diabetes is becoming an epidemic of serious consequences that must be restrained with the awareness of all the governments. We think that its appearance must be restrained, the same that its complications and also we have to investigate in order that future generations won’t suffer this disease. For all the above, and in the knowledge that our contribution is modest, we support this campaign and we trust it will have a major success.” ONE TOUCH ULTRA Team, www.diabetesaventura.com.
